PERFIDIAM IMAGINUM
Artemis Hatfield
Edition of 30

Perfidiam Imaginum is a series of cyanotypes created by Artemis Hatfield.

The series examines the reality of the photographic document, it follows Atkins’ depictions of British Algae in the 19th century, when photographic images were a sign of absolute truth, or so it was claimed.
Jumping to the 20th Century and Joan Fontcuberta created a warped vision of the reality of flora in “Herbarium” by physically constructing fictitious plant life.

And with this project, Hatfield has utilised a combination of current technology and historical photographic processes, using both Atkins and Fontcuberta as a starting point to explore the documentative properties of photography, simultaneously being truthful and deceptive with these surreal depictions of life.

Every copy of the book has an original cyanotype cover, making each book unique as cyanotypes are impossible to identically reproduce.
The cover cyanotypes are printed on 350gsm paper, which gives the book a beautiful texture and longevity.

The spine to each book has been hand bound with waxed thread, using a saddle stich to allow the pages to rest almost completely flat.
Each cover has been attached with acid free, archival quality glue, ensuring the publication is made to last.

Each book has been crafted by the artist themselves, with hours being taken to ensure the high quality of every single copy of this unique photobook.

All cyanotypes on the inside pages of the publication have been scanned at 300dpi on professional Epson flatbed scanners resulting in such high quality reproductions that you can see the texture of the original prints in the book.
